Ten percent of Ireland´s population has Irish red hair. Red or Titan hair, is the rarest natural hair color, only 2 percent of the world´s population has it.

So why is it so prominent in Ireland? So... is it just a myth, or just a stereo type? Or... could there just be some truth in this? Well... let´s look at the facts!!

Can you believe that out of the worlds population approximately only 2% have red hair. In Northern and Western Europe the percentage of redheads is slightly higher between 2 and 6 percent.

But amazingly in Ireland and Scotland, over 10 percent of the population has natural red hair!

What Causes Red Hair

Red hair is actually a mutation! The genetics of red hair was first discovered in the year 1997. People with Red hair are normally have pale skin and freckles.

Making them sensitive to ultra violet light. What was found is that the dark pigment eumelanin is quite low in individuals with red hair.

But what gives the hair the color is a high level of the pigment known as pheomelanin. People with red hair basically have a mutation in the melanocortin-1 receptor (MC1R), which is found on chromosome 16 and this is why people have the red hair color.

For some reason the MC1R recessive gene, which gives hair the hair a red color is found to be more prevalent among the people from Scotland and Ireland.

Hence the reason the Irish and Scottish have the highest percentage of redheads in the world. Luck of the Irish, I guess!
